My father was stationed in California as a Marine and was volunteered to go to Nevada. To be a ground zero test dummy, after driving a jeep dropping fellow Marines a few hundred yards apart. Parking the jeep next to the last fox hole about 800 yards from the blast site, and getting in the fox hole just before the blast. After watching the ground separate between his fingers, feeling like his back was on fire. Then getting up after the alarm was sounded and finding only a chunk of metal where he left the jeep. Then the whole group were taken to a facility and given 20 minutes to shower and dress for transportation back to their respective assigned facilities.
The opportunity to get genetic testing for radiation exposure on Enewetak is both exciting and frightening. In some ways I want to know, yet at the same time this knowledge would be crushing.
